2009 UCSD Longboard Luau - 16 Years of Surfing for Cancer Research - The initial count puts the 2009 total funds raised at $380,000

For the past 16 years, beachgoers have been invited to watch respected surfers, business leaders, community members and cancer survivors “surfing for a cure” at the annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational held at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This year members of the general public had the opportunity to participate in the Longboard Invitational portion of the event which took place on Sunday, August 23.

“The Longboard Luau is a one-of-a-kind event that allows everyone to come together to share in the ‘aloha’ spirit and raise money for a good cause,” said event co-chair Jessica Yingling. “It’s one of the most successful surfing fundraisers in the world, and to date has raised more than $3 million for research at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. By inviting more people to participate, we hope the event can be an even greater success.”

The tournament took place at Scripps Pier in La Jolla beginning at 7:00 a.m. and continued for most of the morning. Teams competed for trophies, but the emphasis was not on skill level but rather participation and support for cancer research. Following the invitational, a ceremonial conch was blown at 11:30 a.m. to signal the beginning of the luau, which featured a sumptuous buffet, live music and traditional Polynesian dance presentations as well as live and silent auctions.

In previous years, the surf teams were sponsored by companies and comprised of four team members selected by sponsors as well as a randomly selected surf “legend.” New this year, individuals interested in competing in the invitational could also earn a spot on a team—side-by-side with a surf legend—by fundraising through Active.com. Anyone interested in joining a team needed to commit to raising $2,500, which will earn them a coveted spot in the competition as well as two tickets to the Luau.

Santa Monica - A Great California Beach and Coastal Community

Santa Monica California - A Great Beach Town to Visit in the
Southern California and Los Angeles Area

The beaches of Santa Monica - some of the best in California!

The beaches of Santa Monica - some of the best in California!

There are a lot of great beach and coastal communities to visit in Southern California, but few if any can bring the amount of fun and things to do that Santa Monica  offers.

Santa Monica is located west of Hollywood and Beverly Hills and  just 8 miles north of the Los Angeles airport.

The entrance to the Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica has so much to offer it is hard to say where to begin.

Santa Monica is the home of the original muscle beach and also home
to a large amount of beach workout equipment including climbing ropes, pull up bars,
swingsets and miles of great boardwalks and beaches.

The original Muscle Beach started in Santa Monica

The original Muscle Beach started in Santa Monica

It is common to walk down to the original muscle beach section of Santa Monica and
seeing groups of people working out, doing martial arts and also playing chess at
the chess park that sits just south of the pier.

Santa Monica is a somewhat upscale beach community with some very high end hotels like
Shutters Hotel on the Beach and also the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel sitting right along the
boardwalk areas.

The amusement park on the Santa Monica pier

The amusement park on the Santa Monica pier

In addition Santa Monica is home to one of the oldest piers in California and the only
one which includes an amusement park, arcade games, restaurants and a merry-go-round.

While originally built to satisfy the City’s sanitation needs, the Pier quickly became a magnet
for the fishing community and fueled the imagination of many local entrepreneurs.

Within just a few years, plans were put forth to build an amusement pier adjacent to the Municipal Pier.
Famous carousel manufacturer Charles I.D. Looff arrived in February 1916, purchasing the land immediately south of the Municipal Pier for development.

Looff provided Santa Monica’s north beach with its first successful amusements,
including the Blue Streak Racer roller coaster. The Hippodrome housed the Pier’s Carousel,
and the building still stands today with the distinction of being Santa Monica’s first National Historic Landmark.

In 1918 Looff passed away, and his family continued to run the pier until 1923,
when they sold it to the Santa Monica Amusement Company, a group of local businessmen intent on expanding the famed amusement man’s dream. Their plans included expanding the Pier’s thrill rides,
beginning with the removal and replacement of the Blue Streak Racer with a larger, faster coaster
– the Whirlwind Dipper – in 1924. They also added one of the richest chapters in the Pier’s history
– the La Monica Ballroom.

Vast and ornate, the ballroom consumed so much of the Pier that, when viewed from the beach,
it appeared as a monumental building floating magically above the sea. In 1948, famed country
swing music star Spade Cooley televised his weekly TV program from this ballroom;
it was the first time that a musical TV show was ever televised live.

In addition to a great pier, great boardwalks and great beaches there is also great shopping.

Santa Monica is comprised of eight distinct districts, each featuring its own character and lifestyle options and a unique group of shooping including some great one-of-a-kind boutiques and also great national chains including some of the most cutting edge and trendy clothing stores.

Urban Outfitters Store in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is also the home of the Third Street Promenade, a major outdoor pedestrian-oriented
shopping district that stretches for three blocks between Wilshire Blvd. and Broadway
(not the same Broadway in downtown and south Los Angeles).
Third Street has been closed for those three blocks and converted to a pedestrians-only
stretch to allow people to congregate, shop and enjoy street performers.

The Santa Monica area includes some great restaurants to go with the great oceanfront and beachfront hotels so finding a place for happy hour, a drink or dinner is easy and fun with a very wide selection of choices.

Surfer Dog Hits Waves with 15-Year-Old Spinal Cord Injured Adaptive Surfer

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

SURF DOG CONTEST WINNER CARVES NEW WAVES
AS SHE TANDEM SURFS WITH 15-YEAR-OLD
SPINAL CORD INJURED ADAPTIVE SURFER

9:00 AM Thursday August 20th at Del Mar Dog Beach

SAN DIEGO, CA, August 14, 2009…”Rip Curl Ricki,” a local golden retriever surf contest winner, will be taking to the waves next Thursday, August 20, to learn a new skill: surfing tandem with Patrick Ivison, a 15-year-old spinal cord injured adaptive surfer.  “Ricochet” (as she is known on land) has been surfing since she was a puppy, and has always been part of surfing fundraising efforts for great causes.  The newest project for Ricochet, however, presents a unique and exciting challenge: training to surf tandem, as well as alongside Patrick Ivison, who suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of an accident when he was only 14 months old.  Patrick was diagnosed quadriplegic, but he is able to surf using an adaptive surfboard.

In addition to accomplishing a tandem surf ride with a person with limited physical abilities (rarely, if ever done), Ricochet will use her surf training next week to prepare for upcoming surf competitions/fundraisers for Patrick.

Although Patrick has excelled through the years in both school and adaptive sports (adaptive surfing is his specialty), he recently decided that having a service dog would help him achieve greater independence as he approaches his college years. Paws’itive Teams, a local non-profit organization that places service dogs with persons with disabilities, caught wind of Patrick’s story and matched him with a golden retriever named Kona.

Patrick also participates in an intense physical therapy program funded through Help Patrick Walk, which helps him build strength by exercising parts of his body he can’t move or control on his own.  Since starting his therapy, Patrick has been able to do things he never thought he could.

The costs of training a service dog, and specialized physical therapy are steep, however – that’s where Ricochet’s knack for surfing and fundraising comes in.

Ricochet will be carving waves in San Diego for the next several weeks to prepare for the Helen Woodward Surf Dog Surf-a-thon in Del Mar on September 13, 2009 as well as the Surf City Surf Dog event in Huntington Beach on October 11.

Patrick is an official beneficiary for the Surf City Surf Dog contest, and the proceeds donated to Ricochet through her fundraising efforts will go directly to Paws’itive Teams, and Help Patrick Walk, for the sole purpose of easing the financial burden on Patrick and his family.

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. (August 9, 2009) – Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won their unprecedented fourth consecutive AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Hermosa Beach Open presented by Virgin America Sunday.

Top-seeded Dalhausser and Rogers beat second-seeded John Hyden and Sean Scott, 18-21, 21-15, 15-9, in the final.

Down 7-6 in the third and deciding game, Dalhausser and Rogers went on a 5-0 run to get ahead for good.

Although they’ve now won five of the season’s 10 events, it’s been a relatively mediocre season for the duo, who won 11 of 15 AVP events and an Olympic gold medal last year. They hadn’t won on the AVP Crocs Tour since May.

“What feels even better (than winning four straight) is getting back on the podium,” Dalhausser said.

Dalhausser/Rogers beat sixth-seeded Brad Keenan and Nick Lucena to make the final, and Hyden/Scott beat third-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal.

See below for more flash quotes on their win and Rogers playing with Shaquille O’Neal against two-time gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Sunday for a taping of “Shaq Vs.”

Youngs/Branagh Win Seventh Victory in 2009 at AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Hermosa Beach Open presented by Virgin America; Walsh/Wacholder Finish Fifth in Return to Tour

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 8, 2009) – Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh captured the women’s title Saturday at the AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Hermosa Beach Open presented by Virgin America, securing their seventh victory in 10 tournaments this season on the professional beach volleyball tour.

Youngs and Branagh, the top-seeded team, beat second-seeded Jennifer Kessy and April Ross, 19-21, 23-21, 15-11 in the final to win their second straight tournament. Kessy and Ross are the recently crowned world champions.

“Winning in Manhattan was a huge deal, and also Hermosa,” Branagh said. “This is where we train, so this is our home beach. Huntington, Manhattan and Hermosa – we won all three of those events, and I’m elated.”

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh and partner Rachel Wacholder finished tied for fifth, both playing in their first tournament this year after sitting out most of the season to start families.

The top-seeded men’s team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers moved on unscathed into the semifinals. After winning twice Friday, Dalhausser and Rogers beat eighth-seeded Ty Loomis and Casey Patterson, 21-17, 21-14 on Saturday morning. They toppled fourth-seeded Matt Olson and Kevin Wong, 21-19, 21-14 to advance to the semis. Dalhassuer and Rogers have won four times on tour this season and are aiming for an unprecedented fourth straight Hermosa Beach Open title.

The men’s semifinals will be broadcast live Sunday on Universal Sports at 10:30 a.m. PDT, while the men’s final will be broadcast live on NBC Sports at 1:30 p.m. PDT.

Walsh’s fifth-place finish in the women’s draw marked the first time in 80 career AVP events that she hadn’t advanced to the semifinals. Walsh’s regular partner, Misty May-Treanor, with whom she’s partnered to win 99 events and two gold medals, is taking the entire 2009 season off from competition after suffering an Achilles’ tendon injury participating on the TV show “Dancing With the Stars.”

The AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Hermosa Beach Open presented by Virgin America is taking place on the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
