San Diego Beach Hotels Offer
Great Room Rates for Winter Months

When it comes to San Diego there are a lot of good times to come and visit.

Actually anytime is a good time to visit San Diego, but there are certain times which are great and the winter months are my favorite.

San Diego actually has more sunny days in January than any other month of the year. November and December are also great months with plenty of sunshine and parking at the beaches on weekends.

I like these months of the year because it is sunny from the crack of dawn, (no “June gloom” as you can get in the Spring and early summer months), and when  it does rain, it normally comes through rather fast and cleans out the air for near perfect photos of the local area.

In the summer, getting around everywhere can take some time. The boardwalks are full and so are the parking lots every weekend in the summer along Mission Beach and Mission Bay. In the winter months parking is always easy and wainting for rides at SeaWorld San Diego or Belmont Park is minimal.

Now that gas prices and a slow economy has had an impact on the tourism business, many San Diego beach hotels in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and La Jolla are offering some great discounts on hotel room rates to lure customers in over the winter months.

It is easy to find a hotel within a block or less of the beach for $99.00 per night for those with a moderate budget in mind and many hotels like The Catamaran Hotel and Resort is offering special perks plus up to 25% the guest’s stay.

Feeding Pelicans at the Ocean Beach Pier
Ocean Beach Pier San Diego Ca., 92107

A pelican on the roof of the Ocean Beach Pier cafe

A pelican on the roof of the Ocean Beach Pier cafe

When it comes to fun things to do in San Diego there is a very large list. IN October there are a lot of weekend activities and the weather is normally very good. As a photographer I am always going to Ocean Beach to see if I can get some good surfing photos off the pier or every so often a good shot with a pelican.

The Ocean Beach Pier cafe is one of my favorite places to eat lunch or breakfast with mango pancakes and amazing veggie and lobster tacos.

Since the Ocean Beach pier stretches over a quarter mile into the sea there are plenty of fisherman who like to make this their “fishing hole”.
There is a bait shop next to the cafe that sells just about everything you need for catching fish, or catching the attention of some of the local pelicans. “Anchovies are something they will love to eat”, said a bait shop employee, “just thaw them out and soak them in water for 10 minutes to soften them up”. “Sounds good” I said as I bought 2 bags of anchovies for $3.25 each. Each bag had about 25 anchovies and enough to provide a good snack to a  few of the pelicans hanging out on the rooftop above.

I threw a couple of anchovies onto the roof and was shocked to see that the seagulls liked them just as much as the pelicans. Once I got the pelicans attention they walked right over to the closest spot on the roof where I could toss them up and try to take pictures.
I would say this is better for 2 people with one feeding and another one taking pictures as I was getting a bit “anchovie” smelling with water from the fish dripping off as I tossed them up.

If you really want to get pelicans close and have some fun with the kids come on out to the Ocean Beach Pier and buy some anchovies and feed the pelicans. You will be surprised how long a bag of anchovies can last and how good the pictures and video can be.

Check out some of the links below for photos and videos feeding the pelicans.

LEGOLAND California is a 128-acre theme park located in Carlsbad, California, 30 miles north of downtown San Diego and 90 miles south of downtown L.A.. Skorpions High Performance Skates Hit San Diego Beaches

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Skorpian Sports Ltd. introduces
new high performance skates
for San Diego’s beaches and boardwalks

Mission Beach San Diego Ca.

Skorpion Street Skates...the new thing to hit the San Diego boardwalk!

Skorpion Street Skates...the new thing to hit the San Diego boardwalk!

When it comes to skating down the boardwalks of Southern California beaches there are a host of different things you will see. Roller blades and roller skates are still used frequently along with skateboarders and some tennis shoe styled wheels to go sideways. There is a new super skate however that has hit the beach boardwalks and that is a new 4 wheel skate called the “Quadline Street” produced by Skorpion Sports Ltd. based out of Hamilton New Zealand.

“These skates use high performance wheels, with the frame very much like a car that goes over your shoes”, said skater Mitch Olander. “They are much easier to use than roller blades and the design they have provides much more ankle support”.

Skorpion Skates are new in the San Diego area but local surf shop and bike rental shops expect them to take off. “We have seen a great response to this product from our clients and as the word gets out I am confident this will be as big as roller blades were when they hit the mainstream”, said Orange County surf shop owner Russell Owens.

“We expect to be one of the main shops carrying the product going into the summer of 2009″.

When it comes to a comfortable ride on skates that make skating easy Skorpian skates are sure to be a hit with visitors and locals in the
Southern California beach areas as this new product begins to hit the American Markets.

According to Skorpion Sports LTD president Gary Reid “Over the past few years I’ve heard many amazing tales about the people who are using our skates. From the elderly gentleman in Germany who used his multi terrain skates to be towed behind his Huskies to his mail box a mile away, to the American lady who recently made the most of a trip to Europe by using our Quadline urban skates to transport her quickly between the list of famous sights she wanted to see – I am constantly amazed at the many creative ways that people are using our skates. ”

The San Diego and Southern California boardwalks seem to be the next
place you will see these skates as consumers start seeing more of them
in local sporting stores and surf shops along the coast.

Misti May Treanor Tears Achilles tendon on Dancing with the Stars

Misti May Treanor Achilles tendon injury
requires surgery and a long recovery

Misti May Treanor in Manhattan Beach Sept. 2008

Misti May Treanor in Manhattan Beach Sept. 2008

Just when you thought the stock in the AVP’s biggest rising star
could not get any bigger, the unthinkable happens as Misti May Treanor
tears an Achilles tendon while practicing for her “Dancing with the Stars”
TV show in Los Angeles.

Misty is sort of philosophical about her injury - she’s going into surgery tomorrow and has full hopes of recovery. She was planning on taking a year off volleyball anyway, so now she’ll just mend up and spend some time with her family, reports the Dancing with the Stars blog.

Maksim and Misty trade kind words, and she vows to come back to the show and dance the jive again.

Maksim says, “Misty gave it her all. I’m very proud of her and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

If Misti May Treanor has to take a year off to recover and heal, what does that do for her partner Kerri Walsh and her 2009 season?

The AVP Tour begins in spring and it will be interesting to see what happens as the season gets ready to begin. Even more interesting will be to see which womens team or teams step up to become dominant in 2009 and if Kerri Walsh picks another partner to play with during the recovery.

The AVP Tour will greatly miss their 2 time gold winning olympic champion
but for Misti May Treanor this will be a good time to relax and try to spend more time with her husband Matt, who play for the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team and has his own 162+ game season obligations.

“This may be a blessing for Misti May Treanor”, said SoCal Beaches Magazine columnist Trever Hugh. “What more can you do than go on a year winning streak and capture your second olympic gold medal”? “Misti has done everything possible on the AVP Beach Volleyball Tour and now she can get some well deserved time with her husband and focus on her health and recovery”. “We will miss her although I am sure she will be doing bits with FOX Sports to help broadcast the games and provide insight which will keep her in the spotlight”.

It will be interesting to see what happens going into the 2009 season, not only with Misti, but with her partner Kerri Walsh………stay tuned…….in the meantime Misti get well and go watch Matt win the World Series….Go Rays!

Heavenly Vacations in Mission Beach

Mission Beach San Diego Ca., 92109

When it comes to great places to vacation and visit, none are better in
San Diego than Mission Beach.

“Mission Beach is the top beach destination in Southern California”, said SoCal Beaches Magazine editor Mark Fitgerald. “It offers everything that larger beaches offer in Los Angeles, but with a more boutique and small town attitude”.

Mission beach is unique in that it is covered by water on both sides of a 3 mile peninsula. “Mission Beach is only 2 blocks wide with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Mission Bay on the other”. Fitzgerald claims that this is what makes Mission Beach the best one in Southern California.

“On the ocean side of Mission Beach you have surfing and kite boarding and on the “bay” side you have water skiiing, jet skis, sail boats and hobie craft which provides something for everyone”.  “Add in the fact that there are miles of great boardwalks with palm trees and green grass and you see why Mission Beach is our  editors choice”.

Mission Beach offers a wide range of vacation rentals for tourists visiting the area. You have beach front and oceanfront condos and townhomes along with cottages and homes along the courts and walkways in Mission Beach that sometimes are the most cost effective.

“We have over 150 vacation rentals in our Mission Beach database”, commented Rick Nelson, who helps manage the rentals in the SoCal Beaches Magazine database along with over 20 other local San Diego based websites.

“Right now owners of vacation rentals are offering some great specials to make up for some fo the costs with gas and other travel expenses”.

Nelson says that now is one of the best times to book vacation rentals in San Diego because many owners are looking for keeping places full in the off season and making sure they fill up early for summer of 2008.

San Diego Panda Cam Showcases Bai Yun and Shi Shi

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Panda Cam Ranks as #1 San Diego Web Cam
The San Diego Zoo San Diego California

When it comes to popular web cams and streaming video in San Diego
and Southern California nothing beats the “Panda Cam” at the San Diego Zoo.

The San Diego Zoo has had a love affair with giant pandas ever since two of the black-and-white bears came to visit in 1987. After years of red tape and tons of application paperwork, the Zoo and China agreed on a 12-year research loan of two giant pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi.

The Panda Cam” at the San Diego Zoo gets about 2.8 million monthly visitors”, said tech Ray Dellerson, who with I2B Networks in San Diego provides the feed for the zoo web cams and those at SeaWorld San Diego.

The pandas draw the most traffic, but other cams like the “Shamu Cam” at SeaWorld also boast some big numbers also including over 400,000 monthly visitors and a new “penguin cam” set to go in by the end of the year.

“Advertisers are seeing that live streaming video is a very cost effective way to bring people to the website compared to print advertising”.
