Huge surf and waves crash on the rocks at Windansea Beach

January 2010 has proven to be one of the biggest months for large surf and waves in San Diego for the last 10 years. During the month there have been several large surf advisories along with many storms bringing huge rainfall totals and also big waves to the coast.

This year huge surf combined with lunar high tides which created some amazing sights as monster waves crashed along the La Jolla and San Diego coastline.

Check out some of the photos and videos from these large waves hitting the shores below.

Torrey Pines State Park / Reserve - 8 Great Miles of Coastal Hiking Trails in San Diego

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Torrey Pines State Park | Torrey Pines State Reserve
Great Hiking Trails and Views in La Jolla San Diego

A look at some of the hiking trails and views at Torrey Pines State Park

A look at some of the hiking trails and views at Torrey Pines State Park

Torrey Pines State Reserve is a fabulous place to get out and hike and enjoy some of the best scenic views in San Diego and Southern California. The trails start on the beach and run through some of the cliffs and wooded areas which encompass some of San Diego’s early history.

If you are looking for a great place to go out walking or hiking you will love this nature preserve right off the Highway 5 and Carmel Valley Road in San Diego.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located within San Diego city limits and yet remains one of the wildest stretches of land on our Southern California coast! Because of the efforts and foresight of the people in this area, 2000 acres of land are as they were before San Diego was developed -with the chaparral plant community, the rare and elegant Torrey pine trees, miles of unspoiled beaches, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. One can imagine what California must have looked like to the early settlers, or to the Spanish explorers, or even to the first California residents here, the Kumeyaay people.

There are 8 miles of trails, a visitor center, and guided nature walks on weekends and holidays.

Torrey Pines is visited by travelers from all over the world and by local residents who come daily to rest at the stunning overlooks, walk a peaceful trail, or exercise in a clean, beautiful environment. Spend some time at this web site, then come spend some time at beautiful Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Special care has been taken to preserve it and keep it for now and forever.
Trail status:

Generally open.  The Beach Trail is NOT closed, but the little trail that goes up over the rocks opposite Flat Rock is closed off due to a rockslide. But you can walk south past Flat Rock at low tide (or you could walk through the water with your shoes off) to get to the beach south of Flat Rock.

Due to trail construction, the Rim Canyon Trail and the “Tunnel Trail” (the trail below Red Butte on the east side) are currently closed. Visitors will still be able to go up to Red Butte and down to Razor Point.  Also, Red Butte & Razor Point trails are accessible from the Beach Trail.   Walking from the west, upper parking lot, take the left fork and continue on the Beach Trail. Details available at the Visitor Center.

The Guy Fleming Trail is closed for repairs except for the north side of the trail from the trailhead to the North Overlook. You can still hike a portion of the Guy Fleming. Turn right at the Trail entry and continue to the North Overlook. Then turn around and retrace your steps.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a wilderness island in an urban sea. This fragile environment is the home of our nation’s rarest pine tree - Pinus torreyana. Once this tree covered a larger area. It now grows only here and on Santa Rosa Island off the coast near Santa Barbara.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a day-use park only. There is no overnight camping facility. Picnics are permitted on the beach only. No food or drinks (other than water) are permitted in the Reserve (i.e., the mesa above the beach and the Extension).

There is no place in the park to buy food or drinks. Hikers are advised to bring and carry drinking water on the trails - especially in the summertime.

Location
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar, California, north of San Diego. From Hwy 5, exit on Carmel Valley Road and drive west for about 1.5 miles till you reach the Coast Highway 101. Turn left and proceed along the beach for about a mile. The park entrance is on your right just before the highway begins to climb the Torrey Pines grade.

JAZZ AT THE ATHENAEUM WINTER 2010

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

MUSIC SERIES FEATURES TWO
SAN DIEGO DEBUTS

WHEN: January 27, February 10, 18 & 25, 2010, 7:30pm

WHERE: Athenaeum Music & Arts Library

1008 Wall St., La Jolla, CA

TICKETS: (858) 454-5872

Single Tickets: $19 members / $24 non members

Series: $68 members / $88 non members

The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library announces its winter Jazz at the Athenaeum series, which includes two local debuts. The series features internationally acclaimed musicians in the library’s intimate space. Jazz Times wrote, “The Athenaeum was not designed as a performance space, but it works beautifully for music. The acoustics are excellent in the [music room], where 150 chairs are set up for concerts, and a beneficent ambience is created by the long shelves of music books and the art covering the walls.”

The series opens on Wednesday, January 27, with the Ignacio Berroa Quartet, featuring top Afro-Cuban jazz drummer Berroa with Ben Wendel on saxophone, Otmaro Ruiz on piano, and Carlos Puerto on bass. A native of Cuba, Berroa swiftly rose to become a first-call drummer after moving to the U.S. in 1980. His extensive credits include work with Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter, Slide Hampton, Gilberto Gil, and Ivan Lins, among many others. The New York Times said, “If you want to understand the new Latin jazz – which is one of the almost measurably vital things going on now in jazz – you might as well start with the drummers. This makes Ignacio Berroa quite important.”

A special CD release concert by flutist Holly Hofmann and pianist Bill Cunliffe will take place Wednesday, February 10. Hofmann and Cunliffe are celebrating their nearly 20-year musical partnership with a brilliant new recording entitled Three’s Company. One of the album’s guest soloists, Ken Peplowski, joins them for this live performance. A favorite with Athenaeum audiences, Holly Hofmann is one of jazz’s leading flutists. JazzTimes said, “[she] possesses one of the most exquisite flute tones in jazz…a sure technique, inventive ideas, a secure sense of swing and a broad emotional range.”

Thursday, February 18, brings a San Diego debut by one of the top ensembles in Brazilian jazz, Trio da Paz, comprised of guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson Matta, and drummer Duduka da Fonseca. Lubambo last performed at the library in 2004 with vocalist Luciana Souza, and da Fonseca was drummer for the memorable 2000 Neurosciences appearance by Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum Formed in 1990, the Trio da Paz redefines Brazilian jazz with their harmonically adventurous interactions, daring improvisations and dazzling rhythms. JazzTimes explained, “Paz is Portuguese for peace. From all that peace comes the boundless energy that describes the Trio’s playing: Da Fonseca’s tireless Brazilian syncopations, Matta’s equally percussive, driving bass lines and Lubambo’s lilting, soaring lyricism.”

The series concludes on Thursday, February 25, with another San Diego debut by one of Europe’s leading jazz groups, the Eric Vloeimans “Fugimundi” Trio, featuring Vloeimans on trumpet, Harmen Franje on piano and Anton Goudsmit on guitar. The Rotterdam-based trio is on tour to promote its latest CD, Live at Yoshis, recorded at the Oakland jazz club in 2008. Vloeimans studied jazz and classical trumpet at the Rotterdam Conservatory and the New School in New York City, where he also performed as part of the Frank Foster and Mercer Ellington big bands. JazzTimes called him, “A first-rate improviser possessing a depth of jazz experience,” and “a warm-toned modernist whose inside-outside trajectories unfurl with brassy abandon.”

Tickets for the series are $68 for members and $88 for nonmembers. Single tickets are $19 for members and $24 for nonmembers. Tickets are available now.

La Jolla Hotels Offering Discounted Hotel Room Rates and Special Packages for 2009

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

La Jolla California is one of the premier tourist destinations in San Diego. Checkout a list of 25 La Jolla area hotels which are offering special discounts on hotel room rates for travelers

The scenic coastline of La Jolla California

The scenic coastline of La Jolla California

La Jolla California is one of the most scenic beach and coastal communities in San Diego and Southern California and well known for high end art galleries, restaurants and shopping and hotels and resorts.

In a time where the economy is still lagging La Jolla Hotels are stepping up and offering special discounts and travel incentives to entice visitors to come stay on the beaches and coastal shores at one of San Diego’s most upscale communities.

“We have seen all the hotels in La Jolla offering special rates and package discounts on their hotel rooms in an effort to increase hotel occupancy”, said SoCal Beaches Magazime travel expert Mark Fitzgerald. “Last year it was the moderate priced hotels making an effort and this year (2009) many of the upper and high end hotels are now following the trend to make sure the occupancy rates stay high during the travel season”.

“We now have 25 La Jolla hotels and resorts who have offered discount hotel room rates for
our clients to help increase traffic during summer and off peak months of the year”.

Many hotels like the La Valencia, once known for courting some of Hollywood’s premier stars is now only offering hotel room discounts but also offering some amazing happy hour specials that include $5.00 glasses of house wines during the week and half priced bottles of wine on Monday’s and Wednesdays.

“It is a sigh of the times”, said San Diego travel expert Mary Clark, who has been tracking hotel occupancy rates and travel trends in Southern California hotels for the past 5 years. “Even the more upscale hotels and resorts in La Jolla realize that to keep the hotels full they need to offer more attractive pricing on hotel room rates to make that happen as the economy still tries to recover”.

Here is a list of hotels that are now offering discount hotel room rates.
