Win their 5th Straight Hermosa Beach Open

The AVP Tour came through Hermosa Beach July 16-18th and
Olymic champs Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers continued to
flex their muscle and show they are still the team to beat on the
mens tour.

Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won the AVP NIVEA Tour
Hermosa Beach Open Presented by Bud Light Lime on Sunday,
becoming the first team – men’s or women’s – to win the event
in five consecutive years.

Dalhausser and Rogers, the top-seeded men’s team, beat 13th-seeded
John Mayer and Matt Prosser, 21-14, 21-11, in Sunday’s final. They
lost just one game in five matches throughout the weekend.

Their victory was their 54th open win together, moving them into third
place all time, ahead of current AVP Commissioner Mike Dodd and
Tim Hovland.

“It’s pretty cool considering only one other team has won five
in a row (at the same location),” Rogers said, referring to
Mike O’Bright and Mike O’Hara’s five straight Manhattan Beach
wins from 1960-64. “It’s pretty special.”

Mayer and Prosser were the lowest-seeded men’s team to make
a final this season.

“I would definitely say I was happy to be there. It wasn’t in the plans
as the 13th seed to be in the final,” Mayer said. “But at the same time,
when you get there, I planned on winning. But they make it tough on you.
I’m bummed now, but when I look back on it, I’ll realize it was a
heck of a weekend.”

Dalhausser and Rogers continue to be a step above the others teams
on the tour and some experts think that the only competition they
have is in internation play and teams overseas.

The AVP tour limits the number of international teams which can
compete so that may not be coming any time soon and until then
other teams will need to step up their game in order to be these
two volleyball “super heros”.

2010 Over the Line “Best of” Videos Showcases Crazy San Diego Fundraising Event

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

The first weekend of the 2010 Over the Line or “OTL” Tournament
as it is called by locals did not disapoint OMBAC event organizers
who saw huge crowds show up for the opening weekend.
Fifty five thousand people were expected to attend the
4 day event which stetches over two weekends.

Players from the 2010 Over the Line Tournament

The event is clebrating its 57th year of fundraising for local
San Diego and beach area charities which include The Boys
Scouts, wheelchair OTL and many other local groups. Last
year the amount raised was around $100,000 dollars and this
years event seemed to be just as successful.

The 2 weekend event features over 1,200 teams that play
a beach version softball game on a rectangular field where
the ball must first cross a line 25 yards in front of the batter
in order to be in play. Thus the term “over the line” was coined
to describe the main rule which makes this different from
other forms of softball and baseball.

The game was originally invented and created by volleyball
players looking for something to do while they waited to
play and thus the rectangular field fit well for the beach field
they started and continue to play on.

The Over the Line Tournament on Fiesta Island

The Over the Line Tournament on Fiesta Island

The Over the Line Tournament is known for being a bit crazy
and “over the line”, when it comes the names of the teams
and some of the costumes and antics that the players and fans
go through when playing. Some of the teams are very competitive
while others are there more for the fun and fundraising. It is one
of the very few times that the public is able to bring alchohol to
the beach and many of the party goers take full advantage of
that time bringing large coolers of mix drinks and beer to
Fiesta Island.

Although the festivities can get a little crazy the event itself is
for a good cause and the patrons and teams all compete in
good fun.

The “OTL” Tournament brings in teams and players from a
large section of the Southwest including Arizona, Nevada
and Washington with many teams and players with over 20
years of experience. The first weekend of the event sorts out
the party teams from the series competitor teams and the
second weekend is much more of a 100% sporting event
with much fewer party goers.

One of the teams from the 2010 Over the Line Tournament

The Over the Line or “OTL” is referred to as Mardi Gras
San Diego  style and was once looked at by ABC’s Wide World
of Sports as an event to cover. OMBAC, (Old Mission Beach
Athletic Club) the non profit group that runs the event declined
the event however due to the fact that many of the team names
and antics would have to be edited for television and that was
not good for the spirit of the event.

to be so for years to come as old members of OMBAC pass the
torch to younger members.

UCSD Longboard Luau a Raises Money for Cancer Research

2009 UCSD Longboard Luau - 16 Years of Surfing for Cancer Research - The initial count puts the 2009 total funds raised at $380,000

For the past 16 years, beachgoers have been invited to watch respected surfers, business leaders, community members and cancer survivors “surfing for a cure” at the annual Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational held at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This year members of the general public had the opportunity to participate in the Longboard Invitational portion of the event which took place on Sunday, August 23.

“The Longboard Luau is a one-of-a-kind event that allows everyone to come together to share in the ‘aloha’ spirit and raise money for a good cause,” said event co-chair Jessica Yingling. “It’s one of the most successful surfing fundraisers in the world, and to date has raised more than $3 million for research at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. By inviting more people to participate, we hope the event can be an even greater success.”

The tournament took place at Scripps Pier in La Jolla beginning at 7:00 a.m. and continued for most of the morning. Teams competed for trophies, but the emphasis was not on skill level but rather participation and support for cancer research. Following the invitational, a ceremonial conch was blown at 11:30 a.m. to signal the beginning of the luau, which featured a sumptuous buffet, live music and traditional Polynesian dance presentations as well as live and silent auctions.

In previous years, the surf teams were sponsored by companies and comprised of four team members selected by sponsors as well as a randomly selected surf “legend.” New this year, individuals interested in competing in the invitational could also earn a spot on a team—side-by-side with a surf legend—by fundraising through Active.com. Anyone interested in joining a team needed to commit to raising $2,500, which will earn them a coveted spot in the competition as well as two tickets to the Luau.

Gold Medalists Dalhausser and Rogers Claim Fourth Victory of 2009 at AVP Crocs Tour Huntington Beach Open
Presented by Bud Light

The 2009 AVP Huntington Beach Open

The 2009 AVP Huntington Beach Open

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (May 24, 2009) - Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, reigning beach volleyball gold medalists, won the AVP Crocs Tour Huntington Beach Open Sunday.

Dalhausser and Rogers, the top seeds, beat second-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 22-20, 21-17, to win their fourth title in five events this season.

Facing game point in the first game, down 20-19, the notoriously stoic Dalhausser and Rogers calmly sided out to tie the game at 20, when Dalhausser took over - a block and an ace later, they were up 1-0 in the match.

“We were able to get the points and come back,” Rogers said.

Dalhausser and Rogers got ahead 5-2 in the second game, and except a short Gibb/Rosenthal rally that momentarily tied the score at 13, they stayed ahead.

Top-seeded Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs beat second-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross, 21-19, 21-17, to win the women’s title.

Down 12-10 in game one, they went on a 7-1 run to stay ahead for good. In game two, they forged an early lead and retained it throughout, pulling away on a Branagh ace at 14-12.

This tournament win solidifies the answer to the off-season question of who would replace the team of injured Misty May-Treanor and new mother Kerri Walsh atop the women’s field. Branagh and Youngs have now won four of five tournaments this year and have a match record of 25-1.

Youngs said: “Being the top dog is something I’m enjoying.”

Saturday, Aug 30th began as a hazy morning in Southern California for the start of the second annual Skate the Coast (STC). Some of the haze was due to the marine layer. The rest of the fog was thanks to all the Pabst Blue Ribbon and Red Bull from the registration party hosted by Arbor the previous evening in Venice Beach. Seventy-five longboarders gathered at 7:30am to invade 18 miles of the beach towns from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach.

STC began as an extension of Skate the Lake, a fundraiser benefiting Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC). Skate the Lake (and STC) was created in 2005 by Lake Tahoe locals’ Curt Sterner & Tahoe Longboards founder Chuck “Buckley” Vogt after both men’s mothers where diagnosed with the life-threatening disease. With this trauma hitting so close to home, both men realized the urgency of education & early detection and took it upon themselves to get the message out to as many people as possible.

Skate the Coast 2008 brought out many professional skateboarders all hitting the boardwalks for a great cause.

Skate the Coast 2008 brought out many professional skateboarders all hitting the boardwalks for a great cause.

This B4BC benefit had pro skaters like Arbor’s Andrew Brinkman (thanks for the ride brother) & the previously mentioned Buckley chillin’ with pro shredders like Monix’s’ Allison Hardy & musician Emily Tessmer -all together to support their love of breasts (& skating). A truly great mix of people made this an extraordinary event, which I feel blessed to have been a part of. Seriously, name one thing besides boobs that can get 75 skaters out of bed at 7:30 am…I can’t think of any. By the time the crew gathered at the finish around 3pm it was sunny with a nice onshore breeze –exactly what you would expect from a day at the beach. STC is a perfect example of how two people can make a huge impact. This years Skate the Lake and STC saw a combined 225 participants, raised $9,000, and was seen on Fuel TV as well as Grind TV and now this fine publication.

Early detection of breast cancer is the key, get educated & get checked. Also, if every person who reads this donates $1 and tells twenty friends-then they do the same there is no telling how many lives will be saved. Whether you have boobs or are just a really big fan of them, get involved. Go to skatethelake.org or b4bc.org and help. The life you save could be your own. This all too common disease will see one-million women diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone.

A huge thanks to the Arbor Family, Tahoe Longboards and Sector9 for their generosity and support.
