Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, emerged victorious at the ASP Prime Nike US Open of Surfing over fellow ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) campaigner Miguel Pupo (BRA), 20, yesterday at Huntington Beach. After out carving legend Kelly Slater, Miguel Pupo couldn’t keep up his streak, ending the competition as runner-up behind Wilson.

“I felt like I was just building house the whole event,” Wilson said. “I really had to fight for it every heat in the dying minutes and those heats always feel good. I wouldn’t say I peaked in the final but I got a good start and got two good waves. I’m over the moon,” Wilson continued, “I got a really good start and my hat goes off to Miguel (Pupo) he’s deadly. I knew he was going to be hunting those lefts the whole heat and I just tried to apply a bit of pressure on him. He got that 8.93 and was right back in the heat with plenty of time left. There weren’t that many opportunities out there but it came down to the last minute and I had to just pray there wasn’t one behind it.”

On the ladies end of things, Lakey Peterson, 17, edged out Carissa Moore, 19, to take home the W. This victory cementer her 7th place finish in the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour.

2012 US Open of Surfing Notes
ING & James Lietz have created the ultimate beach paradise with this
event featuring a week long schedule of entertainment and activities.

Now I have covered a ton of beach events including pro beach volleyball
that ING also schedules and provides via “Jose Quervo”, but the Nike US Open
of Surfing totally blows that away. There were more oversized tents,
booths and skateboard ramps than one person could count on a good day
and a ton of beautiful women and men for onloookers to gaze at.

This event goes way beyond surfing and really is a “Lifestyle Event”, which
is why SoCal Beaches Magazine needs even more coverage next year. I have
spoken to James Lietz on a couple of occasions to get the beach events
running on our Internet channels and websites and now I know why he does
not have time to talk – these events are world class and need a ton of
organizing and time to set up.

ING is providing a lot of the life that people see on the beach and
the US Open of Surfing is just one of many events they put on with
the help of clients and sponsors. If you have not attented this event
in the past make sure you do in the future since it is the premier
California beach event right there with the Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball
Contest in August.
