The Birch Aquarium in La Jolla is a world class aquarium and attraction in the San Diego California area located just above the world famous Scripps Oceanography Institute and Scripps Pier.  Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the public exploration center for the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fishes and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and beyond. It is a great place for kids, families and explorers of all ages.

An interactive museum showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, earth and ocean science.  The kids love the interaction provided by the displays which includes great educational interaction along the hallways of fish tanks and aquariums.

In addition to having some great indoor fish tanks and displays there is also an outside area for kids to touch and play with some of the sea life and get educational tours on how the plants and fish live and survive.

For me personally I love The Birch Aquarium because it is the kind of attraction that is a hour and a half to three hour or so thing to do that is not overwelming. Parking is easy, the lines are small, the kids have a lot to see and do and just when you start feeling tired it is time to go.  The views and setting of this place could not be better on the hills in La Jolla where multi million dollar homes dot the hillside.
