It was called the Lincoln Futura and it was unlike anything ever seen before or since. As was a common practice for such concept vehicles, the work was sublet to a specialty coachbuilder. In the case of the Futura, the work was handled by Carrozzoria Ghia in Turin, Italy. Once completed, the cost for this single prototype was reported to be $250,000! The car was debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in January of 1955. The car appeared in a variety of television and print advertisements as well as numerous shows and other automotive venues. The excessively daring styling did not date well and by the mid-1960s was no longer wanted by Lincoln or Ford. It ended up with car customizing and fabrication “wizard” George Barris.<br /> <strong>Comic Legend to Television Classic:</strong></p> <p>In 1965, Barris was commissioned by ABC Television to produce the “Batmobile” for their upcoming series. Molds were pulled from Batmobile No. 1 and copies 2, 3 & 4 were all completed in short order in early November 1966. Each has had long and lengthy show careers remaining in constant demand long after the show went off the air. No. 1 remains with Barris and has never been offered for sale.
