Hermosa man avoids “Who’s Still Standing” TV trapdoor

Jared Young reacts to a contestant. Photo courtesy NBC-TV

Jared Young, a Hermosa musician and volleyball coach, had a televised decision to make.

The one-night star of the NBC-TV trivia show “Who’s Still Standing” – the premiere episode, mind you – had already watched five opponents drop through trapdoors as they were eliminated from the game show, which aired prime time Monday.

Host Ben Bailey, smooth and persuasive as a serpent with an apple, was asking Young whether he wanted to keep the $49,000 he already had won, or risk it all for $1 million in tilts with five more contestants.

This is the moment another game show host, Howie Mandel, dreaded – he once told a TV interviewer that he wished contestants could resist the long shot in favor of the sure thing.

Bailey sweetened the long-shot pot with the offer of another free “pass” on a trivia question, to replace the one Young had used when he did not know that Eden Prairie, Minnesota, was on a magazine’s list of the 10 best places to live.

Young winced under the temptation.

“Forty-nine thousand dollars is a lot of money, but it isn’t $1 million, is it,” Bailey asked rhetorically.

“If you lose, you lose everything,” he added contrapuntally.

In a flash, temptation was cast out.

“I’m taking it, I’m walking, I’m out,” Young told his host.

Young, 40, had been introduced to the studio audience as “a volleyball coach from Conway, Arkansas,” playing up his far-from-L.A. roots. But Young also has lived in Hermosa for a decade, coaching volleyball through a city program and performing at local venues with a singer-songwriter-rock approach that has drawn critical raves.

The personable and charismatic Young was discovered by game show casting people when he was playing in a CVBA volleyball tourney, and made it through three rounds of auditions for the show “Minute to Win It” before landing the central spot in the premiere episode of “Who’s Still Standing,” which is patterned after an enormously popular Israeli show “Still Standing.”

The episode was taped on a March morning, and Young had been told of the taping only the night before.

After hours of “hurry up and wait,” he stood on a circular trapdoor in the middle of a TV stage, surrounded by a circle of opponents on their own trapdoors.

“To be honest with you, it felt like a Las Vegas casino,” he said. “It was cold, the air was clean, everyone was really encouraging.”

The blocking was specific. Young had to remember which of a series of cameras to look into as he chose contestants for one-on-one battles and answered questions.

Young said he made his keep-the-money decision in part because he felt his luck running out.

“I thought I could drop a couple more people, but I thought some of them would be pretty tough,” he said.

“They were giving me free money. There aren’t many chances to win $1 million, but I was afraid I would blank out,” he said.

He recalled with dread the question about a Minnesota town.

“I don’t think even the people of Eden Prairie could have answered that one,” he said.

On the show, Bailey asked Young whether he wanted to make his exit from the set “through the door or through the floor.” Like a good sport Young chose the floor, allowing his hosts to open his trapdoor in the middle, like a pair of swinging saloon doors, and plunge him downward.

“I don’t know how far you fell, but you felt it,” he said. “They had a nice little safe foam area, and four guys standing around you. It was a pretty good drop.”

Like the other contestants, Young looked surprised but sanguine as he fell. He said that effect was aided by some TV magic.

“The way they edit it, you don’t see it, but I knew I was going to drop, I was waiting for it, and it never came. So I thought they weren’t going to do it,” he said. “Then the minute I relaxed – boom, they dropped me.”

Young’s opportunity to appear on the show is one he’s glad he grabbed.

“It was a unique experience. That’s one reason L.A. has so much charm, you never know what’s going to happen to you,” he said. “I had a chance to be on the show, and what do you know, I won some money.”

The Nightlife: late night munchie patrol & drinks with Eva

Bartender of the Week: Eva at Watermans in Hermosa Beach

Bartender of the Week: Eva at Watermans in Hermosa Beach pouring a 3 olive, bubble gum vodka shot. Photo by Anna Cox

Soon to open: Establishment, formerly Blue 32. Could be as early as December 27, or possibly January 11. Mike, Wealthy, and the gang will return. You miss those beaded drapes and so do I. Unfortunate closing in Hermosa: Amigos Tacos, on14th St., one fewer joints open after 2 a.m.

Celebrity sightings: MemphisGrizzlies NBA player Marc Gasol spent some of his new, $58 million contract on Pier Ave. Way to shop small business! Also, ESPN’s Rick Reilly made a pit stop at Granny’s Grocery. Saturday afternoonHermosa Beach was flooded with Santa Claus participants as the infamous SantaCon LA 2011 rolled through.

6 Places open after 2 a.m. to Fuel Your Drunk Munchies

1. Paisanos Pizza Pasta, Hermosa Beach — All the usual toppings plus Baked Ziti, White Chicken, Eggplant, and Sicilian served by Armando. I like the pastrami pizza using mustard instead of pizza sauce. It’s like a sandwich trying to be a pizza, but it works.

2. Subway, Hermosa Beach — Favorites late at night are the “hot” sandwiches such as chicken bacon ranch, meatball, and buffalo chicken served by Nelly and Jessica.

3. Pita Pit, Hermosa Beach — This is your healthiest food choice for the evening. Add double spinach to any kind of pita, falafel, if you’re like me. It’s safe to say you may even feel proud of yourself after this midnight snack, or Pam can serve you cookies if you do wanna feel guilty.

4. Pedone’s Pizza, Hermosa Beach – Juan offers a limited menu after midnight. Pizza by the slice. Topping choices are: cheese, pepperoni, mushroom sausage. All appetizers and salads are available too.

5. Big Mike’s Philly Steaks, Subs, Hermosa Beach — Limited menu of about three choices for late night noshing from Annabel.

6. The Kettle, Manhattan Beach — Open 24 hours. Awesome honey bran muffin. Awesome butter. Awesome everything.

Hangover help: Ashley’s Deli’s Kristine recommends their Hot Breakfast Sandwich called the “Stubbie,” which has egg, black forest ham, bacon and melted American cheese. WARNING: Do not call this by any other name when ordering.

December Nightlife Tip: Be wary of super hot chicks (hustlers) who seem too good to be true. Recall that allegedManhattan Beach female con-artist? Do not leave “new friends” alone in your bedroom. I’ve heard of chicks trying to steal from my guy friends, look in their closets, etc. Keep an eye on your one-night stands. Don’t be THAT guy. And ladies, don’t be THAT girl, either.

Bartender of the Week: Eva at Watermans inHermosa Beach. Expert shot maker with an endless list of new things to try. Such as: bubble gum shot, eggnog shot, hot buttered rum shot, even Tanteo cocoa-infused tequila shot. Her smile and other assets attract an international following that returns annually. Not known for her height, just look for the rhinestone-encrusted beer opener.

Time remembers Hermosa Beach home it forgot

Robi Hutas looks to the future. Photo by Chelsea Sektnan

The clock has begun to tick again for the home that time forgot – a funky, 1950s-era apartment complex where the rents stood still as long as landlord Jack Hoy lived.

With Hoy’s passing earlier this year, rental rates for the tenants of the complex, on the corner of Eighth Street and Manhattan Avenue, will move into the 21st century. The new rents will be competitive for lodgings short blocks from the beach, but they will nearly triple in some cases for some renters who had basked in Hoy’s beneficence for decades.

Forty-seven year resident Robi Hutas, a photographer known for his landscapes and his extensive vintage beach volleyball catalogue, will see his rent go from $460 to $1,350 a month in February. He also was asked for a $460 security deposit.

Hutas, 75, doubts he can come up with the scratch. He does handyman duty, everything from cleaning windows and carpeting to upholstery and mini-blinds.

“It doesn’t matter what you do, there is no work,” he said.

“I have no place to go, man. I’m looking, I’m looking all over the place,” he said.

John Miller, a semi-retired landscape and surf photographer and a board member of the Hermosa Beach Historical Society, said it does not look like Hoy left a request for rent control in any documents he left, but Miller was continuing to investigate.

“This is the reason they went for rent control in Santa Monica…You triple the rent on a 75-year-old man, you’re essentially throwing him out on the street,” Miller said.

“He paid enough rent to have bought the building, and they never had to rent his apartment, never had it vacant, hardly did any repairs,” Miller said. “They should be grateful, instead of treating a tenant this way.”

Miller said he hopes the new owners might allow longtime tenants to remain under the old rental terms until they move or pass away.

Phone calls to Hoy’s trustee, longtime friend Adriana Whitney, were not returned by press time.

Property Supervisor Laurie Volpe, of Vitco Properties in Torrance, said she did not know details of the apartments’ new ownership, and although she cannot make decisions about rent increases, she was approached on behalf of Hoy’s old tenants.

Volpe questioned whether many people inheriting an apartment complex would accept rents that might “not even pay their taxes.”

“It’s a really sad, sad thing that they just can’t walk away and think about it as, they had a great run. It bothers me for the deceased,” she said.

“I feel bad, but then again, that was a great break,” Volpe said. “I never got break like that.”

Hoy, a retired aerospace engineer, bought the white, two-story building with 13 irregularly shaped and sized units in the mid-1970s, and did not allow the market price to dictate what he charged for lodging.

A few months after Hoy purchased the building, Hutas said he received a little envelope from his new landlord with an apologetic note – rent was being raised a whopping $20. Six or seven years later, another envelope arrived. “You know what he raised it? Another twenty bucks,” Hutas said. “I mean, how beautiful can you get?”

Hutas said that someone once asked Hoy point-blank why he didn’t raise the rent. “He said, ‘Because I don’t need it.’ Are you believe that? I don’t need it! They just shook their head. They didn’t get it.”

Hoy lived the good life alongside his neighbor-tenants, riding his bicycle, playing volleyball and chess, and donning a warm red jacket once a year to fish for salmon and halibut in Alaska, bringing back his haul for a fish fry in the apartments’ courtyard.

Time stood still until a couple of years ago, when a cancer in Hoy’s neck began to spread, taking his health as it went. In September Hoy passed away, at home, in the bed of his upstairs unit facing the ocean, at age 73.

Police cite 11 in shoulder tap sting

Police cited eight people in Manhattan Beach and three in El Segundo for buying alcohol for a minor, while conducting a shoulder tap sting on Dec. 19.

A minor decoy, supervised by police officers, stood outside different stores, asking adults to buy alcohol for him or her. The decoy told the adults their real age. Ninety-one adults were asked to purchase alcohol in the two cities.

The program is used to detect and deter alcohol sales to minors, police said in a release.

Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and El Segundo police departments received a $50,000 grant that extends to June 30, 2012, to reduce alcohol-related crimes throughout the cities. This includes providing training to personnel in stores or restaurants licensed to sell alcohol, training patrol officers, and conducting inspections and sting operations to find out whether licensed establishments are following state laws and local operating permits.

La Jolla, CA – The 8th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance continues to grow since it was first presented by the La Jolla Historical Society in 2010. The steering committee voted unanimously to change the name from the La Jolla Motor Car Classic to the “La Jolla Concours d’Elegance” for the 2012 show, reflecting the growth into a weekend destination event. Maintaining its April date, the concours will be held on Sunday, April 1st, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with preceding events on Friday and Saturday, March 30th and 31st leading up to the main event on Sunday.

We continue to expand our show to attract the best cars around and open the event to more of the community”, said Mike Dorvillier, Chair of the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance committee. “We’ve outgrown our old name, yet we’re still a show for and by ‘car guys’ – we’ll be honoring restorers again this year.”

In addition to the name change, The La Jolla Concours d’Elegance is working on launching a new website – LaJollaConcours.com – in November 2011. “At this point, we want to make people aware of the name change and save the date for the Concours on April 1st. Our website will allow online ticket sales and registration when it launches,” said Dorvillier.
